Who runs the .nl registry, and from which country?
IANA lists SIDN, Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland, P.O. Box 5022, Arnhem, as both manager and technical operator of .nl. A stichting is a Dutch foundation, so the registry is a non-profit body under Dutch law. WHOIS answers on whois.domain-registry.nl and RDAP on rdap.sidn.nl. The registry website is sidn.nl, and IANA updated the record on 20 June 2024. No ICANN registry agreement applies: .nl follows SIDN's regulations and Dutch law.
Can a court in the Netherlands take down or seize a .nl domain?
Dutch courts have direct authority over SIDN in Arnhem. The Netherlands is an EU member state, so judgments from other member states can be recognised there under EU rules, and an order addressed to SIDN may start in another EU country. We could not confirm SIDN's published procedure for court orders on this page, so we do not describe one. No US company appears in the IANA record for .nl.
What does PanamaRegistrar do with a complaint about a .nl domain?
Nothing happens to a .nl domain on a complaint alone. Copyright, defamation, political or competitor complaints need a decision from a Panamanian court; a foreign judgment must first be recognised in Panama by exequatur. Phishing, malware, botnets and fraud that takes money from victims are suspended within 24 hours of a well-documented report, child sexual abuse material immediately, and the URLs are reported to NCMEC. You are told before any action on your domain, unless the law or the court order forbids it; with Domain protection, every complaint is also read by a person before any action on the domain. This rule covers what PanamaRegistrar does, not the registry or our registrar partner. Steps and time limits: takedown procedure and how we handle complaints.
Who uses .nl domains, and why?
Sites aimed at the Dutch market use .nl, according to the dataset. Dutch shops, public bodies and media use it as their first extension. Registration is open worldwide. Terms run one year at a time, so a .nl name is renewed every year. A business selling in Belgium and the Netherlands often holds both .nl and .be.
Which registry rules are specific to .nl?
Holders who are not in the Netherlands receive a SIDN domicile address, according to the dataset. SIDN's wholesale cost was about 5.06 US dollars a year in our dataset. PanamaRegistrar sells .nl with Domain protection only, because the registry needs a holder name and a postal address. .nl supports DNSSEC.
What does the WHOIS show for a .nl domain?
SIDN redacts personal data of holders in public lookups, per the dataset. With Domain protection, the holder of record SIDN receives is our company, so your own name and address never reach the registry.
Why is .nl sold with Domain protection only?
.nl is one of the 12 extensions sold with Domain protection only. Its registry needs a holder name and a postal address, and we collect one verified email, so the domain is registered in the name of DomaineGoat LLC. The price, $37.99, is $8.99 for the extension plus $29 for Domain protection. You stay the beneficial owner: full control, a free EPP code, and the domain put back in your own name on request, free. A UDRP complaint names the registrant of record, our company; we tell you, and you can answer it.
Which dispute policy applies to .nl?
WIPO lists .nl among country codes with a variation of the UDRP, with WIPO as provider. We have not compared the .nl rules with the UDRP clause by clause. Can PanamaRegistrar stop the .nl registry from acting on a court order?
No. The .nl registry, SIDN (Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland), keeps its own copy of the registration and applies the law of its own country. PanamaRegistrar decides only what its own service does: we act on Panamanian court orders, not on unverified complaints. Our registrar partner also keeps its own legal duties.
